Guidelines on energy conservation issued
The federal government has issued new guidelines for efficient use of energy to industries in the wake of ongoing energy crisis caused by rapidly rising consumption, depleting domestic oil and gas reserves and escalating international fossil fuel prices.
In order to promote more efficient use of energy, the federal government has sent fresh guidelines to all the industries as well as the chambers of commerce and industries (CCIs) and trade association.
The guidelines said that efficient use of energy could save 20 to 25 per cent of the present consumption. The energy conservation methods are divided in two categories, immediate energy conservation and medium term energy conservation.
In immediate energy conservation, the government has requested to the industries to encourage employees to use lights directly overhead and switch off unnecessary lighting, which would approximately save 15 per cent energy. Replace standard fluorescent
tube lights with energy saving bulbs (CFL) saves around 20 per cent electricity.
For control weather condition, the federal government has asked to adopt effective temperature regulation by limiting office temperature at not higher than 22 degree Celsius in winter and not blow than 25 degree Celsius during summer. Timely maintenance and replacement of inefficiency HAVC, space heating system is necessary to control the temperature. These steps will save minimum 15 per cent energy.
Reducing outdoor, building illumination and switching off billboards lighting in peak hours approximately save 25 per cent electricity. Reducing consumption of lighting and illuminations by 30 to 50 per cent during peak hours can save 25 per cent energy.
The federal government has requested to wrap water heater with heater blankets and lowering geysersĄ¯ thermostat can save about 15 per cent energy. The industries should introduce public and staff awareness programmes, since the involvement of consumers is vital for success of any energy management programme.
In medium term energy conservation instructions, the federal government has requested the industries to replace pool pumps and motors with updated more efficient equipments. Replace old air conditioners and evaporative coolerĄ¯s with new energy efficient models. Replace old wirings and connect them in parallel connections rather then series so to avoid switching on them together saves about 10 to 15 per cent energy.
The present run for second-hand production equipments, machinery imported from industrialized countries should be considered very carefully. Most of these second-hand equipments have very low energy efficiency and therefore will offset the initial savings. Energy costs from operating low efficiency second-hand production equipments are normally 15 to 20 per cent higher as compared with the modern production process machinery. So it will be better to import new updated, energy efficient machinery and equipments rather then second-hand. Introduce capacitors into electric, electronic equipment staring system, which will positively influence the power factor and reduce electricity bill considerably. Water heating is one of the major sources of energy consumption; the use of solar water heating system is highly profitable. It was mentioned in the guidelines that examples from aboard show that payback period for solar water heating system are within one and half years.
For
outdoor lighting the use of photovoltaic system are strongly recommended. Payback period for
solar lighting system are within 2 years and energy savings of about 15 per cent. Appointment of an energy management auditor was suggested for all major industries to introduce immediate and medium term energy saving measures. These steps would be helpful in reducing energy consumption by 20 to 30 per cent and also reduce the 30 per cent energy industry bill.
